Only about 8% of people achieve their New Year's goals
Only about 8% of people achieve their New Year’s goals.
Most people focus on what they want. Very few get clear on why they want it.
As Tony Robbins explains in “Awaken the Giant Within” (the first book I ever read): Almost everything we do is driven by avoiding pain or seeking pleasure. If a goal isn’t connected to one of those, motivation won’t last.
Another useful principle comes from The 12 Week Year: Shorter cycles, less dreaming, more execution. Thinking in months and cycles instead of years creates urgency and accountability. I highly recommend reading The 12 Week Year book.
... and from Stoic philosophy: Focus on what you can control, your actions, effort, and consistency ... not outcomes or external factors.
So what really helps: - Get clear on the why (pain you avoid / pleasure you seek) - Build systems, not wishes - Focus on small actions, consistency, and repetition - Measure execution weekly or at least monthly, not yearly
Goals sound nice. Systems change lives.
